Dental Crowns Gosforth

A dental crown, often referred to as a “cap,” is an artificial covering that fits over the remaining portion of a prepared tooth. It strengthens the tooth and restores its natural shape.

Crowns are commonly used for teeth that are broken or have been weakened by decay or large fillings. They can be made from materials like porcelain, ceramic, or gold.

Crowns may also be recommended for various other reasons, such as:

  • To improve the appearance of discolored fillings.
  • To protect a tooth that has had a root canal, as these teeth tend to be more brittle.
  • To help secure a bridge or denture in place.

The Process:

The process typically involves two appointments. After an initial consultation and treatment planning, the next step is the crown preparation appointment. Your dentist will first numb the area with local anesthetic, then carefully file down the tooth to make space for the crown. A filling may be added to strengthen the core of the tooth if necessary. Next, your dentist will take an impression or scan to send to the lab for creating the crown. A temporary crown will be placed while you wait for the final one.

At the second appointment, the temporary crown will be removed, and the final crown will be checked for fit and color. Once it’s confirmed to be a good match, the permanent crown will be securely cemented into place. If needed, additional anesthetic can be given during this stage.
